FIRE INVESTIGATION UNIT ABOUT Fire Investigation Units (FIUs) are a type of specialized vehicle utilised to support the investigation of fires by determining their origin, cause, and development. FIU carry essential equipment for evidence collection, forensic analysis, and secure storage, allowing Fire Investigation Officers (FIO) to conduct on-site examinations. In the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), CSUs may be mobilised to incidents where the cause of the fire cannot be readily determined, is suspected to be deliberate or is fatal. Across Scotland, there are three Fire Investigation Teams, there is one team per Service Delivery Area (SDA). FIUs are crewed by trained Fire Investigation Officers who attend incidents on a request basis. Mobilisation is coordinated through an on-call rota system, Specification Fire Investigation Equipment Forensic tools for scene examination and evidence collection, portable lighting, sampling and analysis kits for detecting fire accelerants and other causes. Operational Facilities Mobile workspace for on-scene assessments, secure storage compartments for evidence collection and preservation, basic welfare resources. Evidence Collection & Legalities Trained to take statements from crews, establish source of fires and collection of evidence for legal proceedings.

Elgin Elgin Community Fire Station is a former Grampian Fire and Rescue Service station situated in Moray. The station has five bays and operates on a combined wholetime and retained duty basis. Elgin has a co-location scheme in place with the Scottish Ambulance Service allowing for a paramedic response unit (PRU) and pateint transport vehicles to be based at and respond from the station. Elgin has one of three incident support vehicles (ISV) located throughout the Grampian region. The ISVs carry a range of equipment, notably 50 breathing apparatus (BA) cylinders, mass decontamination equipment, basic refreshments and a variety of logistical support. ISVs can be requested at any time but should generally be mobilised when more than 4 BA sets are in use at an incident. A support pump must be mobilised alongside the ISV, which will generally be the station's retained crew but if this is not possible the nearest wholetime pump should be mobilised as support (every wholetime crew in the Grampian region are sufficiently trained in ISV procedures). The two other ISV are located at Peterhead and Dyce . The station boasts Level 3 water rescue capabilities, the highest level, with a dedicated Water Rescue Unit (WRU) and a trailed boat. Crewed by Level 3 water rescue technicians and rescue powerboat operators, the team can perform rescues by entering or swimming in water, and utilize boats or rescue skids. WRUs are typically dispatched to all water rescue incidents, supported by an additional WRU when needed. Elgin is equipped with a High Volume Pump (HVP) module, carried on a prime mover. One of only four stations in Scotland with this capability, the HVP system is used for pumping large volumes of water over long distances during incidents such as flooding or fires that demand a significant water removal or supply. This asset enables Elgin to support operations requiring extensive water resources. Buckie Community Fire Station is a former Grampian Fire and Rescue Service station situated in Moray. The station has two bays and operates on a retained duty basis. Buckie is one of only three stations in Scotland to have a '10-man pump'. This type of pump was developed by the Grampian Fire Brigade to carry a crew of 10 instead of the standard six. To support the larger crew, the pump has an additional Officer In Charge (OIC) and extra equipment. It is also capable of responding alone to some incidents that would typically require two crews due to the extra personnel and equipment. The only other stations that facilitate such an appliance are Ballater and Turriff. Buckie operates a unique water carrier, which is the oldest operational fire appliance in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. It was originally a turntable ladder, however, it was involved in a rollover accident in Aberdeen City Centre. The appliance was then renovated and transformed into a water carrier. The water carrier has a capacity of 7500 liters.

Inside the overall module are two sub-modules carrying the HVP equipment. HVPs are primarily used in situations where local water supplies are insufficient, such as wildfires, large industrial fires, or significant flooding. HVPs typically extract water from major water sources, such as rivers, lochs, or reservoirs, and transport it to the incident site. In cases of major flooding, they may also be deployed to pump water away from affected areas to reduce damage and restore access. Throughout the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) , there are four HVPs, all of which were provided by the Scottish Government to select legacy services under national resilience framework. All SFRS HVP require five HVP operators and two certified drivers to mobilise. Additional HVPs are privately operated sites such as the Grangemouth Refinery . Specification HydroSub Submersible Pump Submersible pump system capable of drawing water from deep or challenging sources. Pumping Capacity Depending on the type of hose and operational setup, an HVP can pump water at rates between 8,000 and 22,000 litres per minute (lpm). Hoses A total of 3km 150mm hose is carried altogether, with 1km in the first sub-module and an additional 2km in the second, as well as ancillary equipment. Distance Capability Utilising all available hose with a flow rate of 8,000 lpm, the system can transport water over distances exceeding 3 kilometres.
