W906UDP Water Ladder DESCRIPTION W906 UDP is a former Grampian Fire and Rescue Service water ladder, built by EmergencyOne on a Dennis Sabre XL chassis. Designed for versatility, the appliance is equipped to handle a wide range of incidents, including fires, road traffic collisions, and rescues. This appliance particularly unique in that it is one of only three "10-man" pumps ever purchased by Grampian Fire Brigade, designed to accommodate a larger crew than standard pumps. This allows the vehicle to respond solo to incidents that would typically require two pumps. Out of these pumps, this appliance was the only Dennis, and remains the only operational Dennis in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Stationed at Ballater Fire Station, the appliance operates on a retained-duty basis. The extra capacity on board includes additional firefighting equipment and a second officer in charge (OIC), ensuring that the vehicle can handle complex incidents independently. Given Ballater's Fire Station’s Level 2 water rescue capabilities, W906 UDP is also equipped with extra equipment for water rescues and flooding incidents. History (901) 2000: The appliance is allocated to Ballater Fire Station as part of a new trial by Grampian Fire Brigade into 10-man pumps. (R38P6) 2016: Following the 2013 amalgamation of all eight Scottish fire and rescue services the appliance callsign is updated to a national standard. • Line Rescue Unit | ChasingBlues

LINE RESCUE Unit ABOUT Line Rescue Units (LRUs), also known as Rope Rescue Units (RRUs), provide specialist technical rescue capabilities for incidents involving height or below-ground environments. These units are designed to assist in the rescue of individuals from heights or confined spaces, such as cliffs, cranes, and gorges. LRU are essential to Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) work at building collapses. Despite having capabilities for the likes of cliffsides, it is generally understood that this is the jurisdiction of Mountain Rescue Teams (MRTs), with urban settings usually being the jurisdiction of the fire service. All fire crews are trained to a basic Safe Working at Height (SWAH) standard, however, LRU crews are trained to perform complex technical rescues requiring the use of ropes, harnesses, and hauling devices, this is known as Level 3+ SWAH skills. Additionally, Level 2 crews cannot transport casualties via rope, meanwhile rope rescue crews may. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) operates four LRUs. For rope rescue deployments, LRU generally require a team of 9 personnel, consisting of five Rope Rescue Technicians (RRT), two Rope Rescue Operators (RRO), and two Rope Rescue Supervisors (RRS). These crewing requirements must be met, and if they cannot the nearest team must be mobilised alongside. Specification Equipment A variety of rope rescue gear such as anchoring & hauling equipment, harnesses, stretchers and other protective equipment. Rear welfare area A rear compartment allowing for crews to equip and set up tools needed to execute rescues. Body Generally a van with plenty space to allow for gear to be stored, however this is not always the case.

HIGH Reach Appliance ABOUT High Reach Appliances (HRAs) are specialist appliances designed for firefighting and rescue at height. HRA feature extendable booms reaching up to 32 metres, the equivalent of The primary role of an MIU is to support complex rescue operations, including plane crashes, serious road traffic collisions, and building collapses. Additionally, they carry supplementary equipment, such as extra breathing apparatus (BA) cylinders, basic decontamination resources, and ancillary tools to assist during large or multifaceted incidents, such as flooding. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) operates four MIUs, most of which were provided under the national resilience framework by the Scottish Government to select legacy services. MIUs are typically ‘jump-crewed’ by the station’s first-out pump crew, alongside a support pump. For USAR deployments, an MIU generally requires a team of 10 personnel, consisting of nine USAR technicians and one USAR team leader. CLASSIFICATIONS Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP) An Aerial Ladder Platform is characterized by its extendable hydraulic boom and a caged working platform mounted at the end. The basket of an ALP will generally be located in the centre of the appliance. Turntable Ladder (TL) A Turntable Ladder is characterised by a long, extendable straight ladder mounted on a rotating turntable. The key feature of a TL is its 360-degree rotation, which enables the ladder to be positioned quickly and precisely. The basket of a TL will usually be mounted on the top of the appliance's cab, facing forward. Aerial Rescue Pump (ARP) An Aerial Rescue Pump (CARP) is a hybrid appliance that integrates the capabilities of a pump with an aerial ladder or platform. They are characterised by the ability to serve both as a primary pumping appliance and as an aerial unit. The basket is usually located at the rear of the appliance. Hydraulic Platform (HP) A Hydraulic Platform is defined by its extendable hydraulic arm fitted with a working platform or cage at the end, they are similar Aerial Ladder Platforms, yet lack the ladder component.
